We see the soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines doing the job they train so long for, but deep down hope they never have to do.
They come from small towns, big cities, country life and everywhere in between.
They are someone's husband, brother, father, mother, wife, sister, true love or friend.
They don't make a great deal of money, but are dedicated in ways we'll never know.
Some people say they are lucky, because they get to see the world, but I'm sure they would rather be at home with their family on any given day.
When called to do so, they go to places that we would not want to be, and because they are there, we are free to go to work, school, church, shopping, or wherever we choose.
Then in the twinkle of any eye, they could be gone, having paid the ultimate sacrifice, so we can continue, to go about our day in the usual way.
"Thank you to all who have, and are still serving our country!"
